TEETH FLUORIDATION

STRENTGHENING OF THE ENAMEL

Enamel is the thin outer covering of the tooth.

At the Dental Oral Center polyclinic, tooth fluoridation is performed by using high-concentration preparations. Fluoride strengthens the surface of the enamel and makes it more resistant to the acid originating from bacteria in the oral cavity. The whole treatment lasts between 15 and 20 minutes.

Fluoride is a mineral that can be found in many foods and drinking water. It makes teeth stronger and more resistant to dental caries, reduces the amount of acid secreted by oral bacteria and thus protects teeth from developing a caries. Adding fluoride to drinking water has been proven to reduce caries by 40 to 60%.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Systemic fluoridation can be performed by systemic application through pills, drinking water, table salt. It is the most effective during the development of teeth because during that period fluoride is incorporated into the hard dental tissues and makes them more resistant to caries.

Topical application of fluoride strengthens the enamel surface and prevents the formation of caries.

Most toothpastes today contain fluoride which makes them very effective in preventing caries. All children up to 3 years of age should use toothpastes with a fluoride concentration of up to 1000 ppm, and children older than 3 years over 1500 ppm.
