Zirconium is quickly becoming the material of choice when dental crowns are concerned. It’s a very strong material, capable of withstanding the physical forces that are daily at work in the mouth. Esthetically, its translucency (allowing light to pass through) is similar to that of natural teeth, which creates an excellent effect.
The esthetics of zirconium crowns is superior, they look like natural teeth, which is very important if the crowns are located in a visible area, or if they are placed next to natural teeth. With this type of crown, there is no black outline, which can be visible in metal ceramic crowns.
The base of zirconium crowns is made of metal as well-known as zirconium, hence they should not be mistaken for non-metal crowns. They shouldn’t be confused with metal ceramic crowns either, where the visible metal base prevents light from passing through.
Zirconium strengthens the crown, while ceramics provides the natural tooth appearance. Zirconium crowns allow light to pass through, just like with natural teeth, unlike metal ceramic crowns, where the metal base blocks light from passing through.
Zirconium crowns are biocompatible with the human body, i.e. the human body accepts them as its integral part.
The creation entails taking imprints for the temporary crowns. The carrier tooth is then precisely filed down and finished with magnifying glasses. The imprints of the filed-down teeth are sent to the dental laboratory for the creation of a zirconium base on a highly precise, computerized CAD/CAM machine. After the first visit to the dental office, the patient leaves with temporary crowns. Once the zirconium base is finished, it is tested in the patient’s mouth. Once we are certain that the zirconium crown fits perfectly, it is sent back to the dental technician so the porcelain can be added. If the need arises during treatment, the dental technician will create one or more sets of temporary crowns that are very similar to the end result, all in the aim of catching the imperfections and removing them, so that you can leave our office satisfied.
